Executive function is a broad term for the cognitive processes that help us solve problems, create a plan, and manage our lives. These functions often develop in a person’s late twenties, which can make the management of school and life challenging.

What is executive function?

Task Initiation

The ability to get started on a task, even when the task is uninteresting or not preferred

Inhibition

The ability to pause before acting (or reacting) and to resist distractions

Working Memory

The ability to hold and use information in the moment

Planning

The ability to create a clear plan, break tasks into steps, and manage time effectively

Self Monitoring

The ability to evaluate your performance and make adjustments if needed

Task Monitoring

The ability to check your progress and make adjustments along the way

Shift

The ability to shift gears, adapt to change, and consider new perspectives

Emotional Regulation

The ability to manage feelings to achieve goals, complete tasks, and direct behavior appropriately

Difficulty in any of these areas can lead to challenges meeting deadlines, managing time, completing multi-step tasks, and maintaining routines. It can also result in trouble regulating emotions and following through on commitments. Executive function skills can be taught and practiced.
