Executive function is a broad term for the cognitive processes that help us solve problems, create a plan, and manage our lives. These functions often develop in a person’s late twenties, which can make the management of school and life challenging.

What is executive function?

Task Initiation

The ability to get started on a task, even when the task is uninteresting or not preferred.

Inhibition

The ability to pause before acting (or reacting) and to resist distractions.

Working Memory

The ability to hold and use information in the moment (following directions, remembering steps)

Planning + Organizing

The ability to create a clear plan, break tasks into steps, and manage time effectively

Self Monitoring

The ability to evaluate your performance and make adjustments if needed

Task Monitoring

The ability to check your progress and make adjustments along the way

Materials Management

The ability to keep track of physical and digital belongings

Cognitive Flexibility

The ability to shift gears, adapt to change, and consider new perspectives

Emotional Regulation

The ability to manage feelings to achieve goals, complete tasks, and direct behavior appropriately
