What is executive function?

The ability to get started on a task, even when the task is uninteresting or not preferred

The ability to pause before acting (or reacting) and to resist distractions
Working Memory
The ability to hold and use information in the moment
Planning
The ability to create a clear plan, break tasks into steps, and manage time effectively
Self Monitoring
The ability to evaluate your performance and make adjustments if needed
Task Monitoring
The ability to check your progress and make adjustments along the way
Shift
The ability to shift gears, adapt to change, and consider new perspectives
Emotional Regulation
The ability to manage feelings to achieve goals, complete tasks, and direct behavior appropriately
Difficulty in any of these areas can lead to challenges meeting deadlines, managing time, completing multi-step tasks, and maintaining routines.
